A Tribute to
Who passed away on Tuesday 8th October 2019
Luctonians received the terribly sad news of the passing of Peter Burgoyne just two days ago (at time of writing). It is very easy for us as a club to be blasé about the use of the words ‘Club Legend’, because we are so very fortunate to be blessed with so many wonderful characters and contributors at Lucs. Peter Burgoyne can however, be held in the absolute highest regard when put into comparison with any of those to have gone before, he really was a club legend.
Peter was here just last Saturday (5th October), for what became his final visit to the club, to watch our 2nd and 3rd XVs in their respective victories. Our Chairman Dickie Williams knew Peter all of his life and has put together the following words in tribute:
On Tuesday evening we received the devastating news of the passing of Peter Burgoyne. Peter, or more widely known as The Commander, has been part of the furniture at Lucs for more years than anyone can remember.
Educated at Lucton School, Peter played his rugby initially for the Old Salorians in Kington. On their merging with Lucs he progressed to captain the 2nd XV and to proudly feature for the 1st XV. On finishing his playing days Peter served as President in the 1982-83 season, Chairman from 1984 to 1992, making him the third longest serving Chairman in the club’s history, as well as serving as club treasurer for a number of years. A staunch supporter who rarely missed a home game and was a frequent supporter at away games, Peter served our great club with a dedication few will be able to equal. He became one of only thirteen individuals to be bestowed a Luctonian life membership, which was an honour he was rightly proud of.
Bidney often quoted ‘ if you want a job done ask a busy man’ and Peter was the epitome of this. He managed to raise a wonderful family and run a successful business but always found time for public service. Most of us will know his commitment to Luctonians but he was also active in many other roles within his community such as Lyonshall PC and church, Kington Show, Kington Golf Club and Kington Cricket Club which he was still President.
A few brief words is hard to sum up the respect we had for this great man and Luctonian so let’s all cheer on the boys this Saturday and raise a beer to him.
RIP Commander – Forever a Luctonian
Peter’s funeral service took place on Thursday 24th October 2019 at the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Lyonshall, with his family and the hundreds of mourners returning to Luctonians at Mortimer Park afterwards.
