LUCTONIANS RFC v MACCLESFIELD RUFC
Saturday 14th April 2018
Luctonians kept alive their fight to avoid relegation by earning a tight victory over a Macclesfield side that had dominated the early stages.
Lucs rarely touched the ball in the opening encounters and Macc deservedly opened the scoring after 24 minutes when James Hampson was fortunate when his own pass rebounded off a Lucs player back into his own hands and raced clear to score for a 5-point advantage.
Lucs ground their way back into the match and were twice unlucky not to level the scores, but they dropped passes with the touchline at their mercy.
However, following a handbags incident involving the forwards in the dying moments of the first half, the referee reversed a penalty for Macc in their own 22 and Sam Boxhall stepped up to give the Home side 3 points to see the Away side lead 3-5 at the break.
Half Time Score
Luctonians 3 v 5 Macclesfield
Lucs stepped up their game in the second half and sensing this might be a tight game, when they were awarded penalties against an increasingly undisciplined Macc side, they took the kicks to goal and Sam Boxhall added two attempts to give the home side a deserved lead going into the final 20 minutes.
However, the always dangerous Lewis Barker gave the Away side the lead against the run of play when he scored following good work by Hall. Barker converted his own try to give the Blues the lead 9-12 going into the final 20 minutes.
Roared on once again by the vociferous home crowd, Lucs were not to be denied and Boxhall’s penalty with 10 minutes to go gave them hope. And they weren’t to be denied, Frank Kelly putting Charlie Meredith away into the corner with time running out to give the home side a deserved victory over the tiring Blues.
