LUCTONIANS RFC v SEDGLEY PARK RUFC
Saturday 10th February 2018
Sedgley Park will have travelled home from this fixture nursing their bodies following a massive defensive performance against an unlucky Lucs side who played almost the entire game in Sedge’s half of the field.
Had a couple of decisions gone in Lucs’ favour when they were in the Sedge red zone they would have taken all the points, some dubious penalty awards from the officials, indiscipline and handling errors allowed their opponents off the hook when under extreme pressure.
The home side took an early lead through Owen Davies who was superb throughout, with Sam Boxhall adding the extras, but Sedge on their first foray into Lucs’ half scored through Maher when he rolled over from a rolling maul.
Josh Watkins added the home side’s second score in what were treacherous conditions under foot when he was driven over, Boxhall again adding the conversion. But Sedge, who were superb in defence throughout bided their time and from only their second attacking move scored again through Maher just before the interval, Matt Riley adding the conversion for a half time score of 14-12.

Luctonians 14 v 12 Sedgley Park
Sedge started the second half with more adventure, but Lucs were belying their league position and playing excellent rugby to keep their opponents once again on the back foot, until Andy Riley for the visitors, spotted a gap in the home side’s back line and stole through to allow McShane to run through and score, Riley again adding the extras to give them the lead against the run of play.
But despite dominating the set piece and the Lucs forwards dominance, the home side could not get through their opponent’s defensive line and Riley’s penalty added to the home sides woe to edge Sedge ahead by 8 points going into the last ten minutes.
Despite a rousing last-ditch effort from a tiring Luctonians, with the raucous home crowd roaring them on, and with Hallam Chapman seeing yellow in the dying minutes for Sedge, Lucs settled for a losing bonus point penalty score from Louis Silver which wasn’t what they deserved for their efforts. Sedge will be all the happier to have secured the winning points knowing they had been a defensive battle throughout and taken advantage of their opportunities when they arose.
