Luctonians RFC  20  v  26  Hinckley RFC

Saturday 4th January 2020

By Geoffers

Luctonians will feel hard done by with not getting more out of this result in what was an excellent game of rugby. Two evenly matched sides slugged it out for the full 80 minutes giving the large crowd a New Year spectacle.

Two late tries, both contentious, one from a dubious forward pass and the second from an equally dubious knock-on that wasn’t awarded, gave Hinckley the upper hand in the last 15 minutes, although they spent most of the second 40 minutes under great pressure from a very determined and resolute home side.

David Peck for Hinckley opened the scoring with a well worked try following a scrum 5 metres out, Joseph Wilson converting. John Morris reduced the deficit when he kicked Lucs’ first points from a penalty before Wilson, who was swift around the park all game, ran in a well worked try after 20mins.

Rob Lewis, who had a fine game for Lucs, skipped through to reduce the deficit on the half hour after taking a great feed pass from the excellent Aiden Cheshire. John Morris converted, before he missing a penalty right on half time which would have seen the hosts lead when they went off for the half time oranges.

Half Time Score
Luctonians  10  v  12  Hinckley

The home side were on the front foot from the start of the second 40. Matthew Fearn saw yellow for a deliberate offside in the red zone with the home crowd screaming for a penalty try.

It wasn’t long though before Rob Lewis scored his second try to put the hosts into a deserved lead with Morris again converting to put the home side ahead 17-12. When Morris added from a penalty it looked to be all over as Lucs were dominating proceedings and Hinckley were on the back foot.

A change of front row for the visitors changed the game and brought Lucs under pressure and Rory Vowles, from a very dubious build up involving a forward pass, skilfully ran in Hinckley’s 3rd try before Callum Dacey ran in their equally debateable fourth, with Wilson converting both. The home side gave their all in the last 10minutes, roared on once again by the vociferous home crowd, but Hinckley defended excellently to ensure the 5 points and limit their hosts to just a single losing bonus point.
