Midlands Premier League
Luctonians RFC 64 v 7 Syston RFC
Saturday 8th September 2018
Well if anyone has a bad word to say about the pitch at Mortimer Park you have got to be a serious saddo. Once again Knocker presented a beauty and so did the Ones, well they did in the first half. Comfortable win? Yes, probably and perhaps too so, after leading 40-0 at half time. 10 tries in total which is 21 in the first two fixtures at home, I guess Newport will provide stronger resistance next week when we travel to Shropshire.
Nothing for the first 15 minutes but it was all Lucs with Isaac Fanueli, Josh Watkins and Mat Hackley all on the charge and causing early chaos.
Joe White was first over after 15mins, following a driving maul, but conversion was missed and Isaac Fanueli followed up with his first try for the club, and he looks like he is going to score a few more. A big lad and a handful for any defence, at pace.
Sam Boxhall, later to be yellow carded for allowing his head band to be ripped off, added the extras as he did for 6 of our tries. Sam was alert as well a couple minutes later, when he set up Tom Jones for his first of 2 tries and after Jones had scored his second minutes later, a well worked move along the line saw Boxhall score under the posts himself.
The DRONE was spotted by the ever observant in the stand and we hope you were all smiling, you should have been considering the score, before we show the edited highlights on Lucs TV.
And it still wasn’t half time when Rob Crowley finished off good work by Drew Cheshire to score leaving us with a 40-point lead when it was time for the half time oranges.
Syston stayed on the field as a morale booster was required, and it appeared to work. They stuck to their guns and, throughout the second half, denied Lucs the pleasure of adding to their tally for long phases. Although they rarely went over the halfway whitewash they didn’t really look like troubling us.
Will Burton, on as a replacement at half time, did race through to increase the lead on 57 minutes, but this gave Syston a bit of a lift and they duly went down the other end and scored through Nunney, Harries adding the extras. Loz Breese saw yellow just before their score as the unfortunate who happened to be closest to the referee following our persistent foul play in our red zone.
A classic Drew Cheshire try however put Lucs back in control when he scored following good work by Boxhall and Burton (sounds like a firm of accountants).
And it all went a bit stale until a massive handbags moment which saw Systons’ Ferguson (we believe) received a red for foul play and Boxhall off for a yellow, for receiving his flailing knee/fist/arm or whatever was thrown.
This left gaps in the Syston defensive line and Josh Watkins showed his pace again to score in the corner following a flowing move from Lucs, Tom Jones kicking a very difficult conversion, before Loz Breese rounded off the scores with a last-minute try, “a la Chris Ashton splash”, which was more akin to a “Peter Kay flop dive”.
So, 5 more league points in the bag and all looking good, although the coaches will be looking for the boys to score and be more dominant in the second half when they have already put the game to bed.
Two weeks and we will be back at Home v Nuneaton following next week’s trip to Newport…. Make Some Noise if you Travel…

They missed another good one.
