In spite of what many people from local rugby clubs will tell you, Brad Smith is one of only a few players within our senior squad who has joined us from a county rival, having chosen to make the switch across to Lucs from Ledbury at the start of the 2014/15 season. Aged just 22, he is still a young rugby player, but in terms of positionally he is a very young loosehead prop, particularly within the environment of a National League squad. In the two seasons he has now been at Lucs, his all round game has developed hugely. Brad combines a decent skill-set with the size of your traditional prop forward, and appears to be improving as a scrummager each season.
Still awaiting his 1st XV debut, Brad has developed from a contender for the number 1 jersey in the 2nd XV, into the predominant owner of that spot over the last two seasons. The natural progression will obviously be to begin excelling in that shirt, before he then looks to be one of a group of younger props who will look to the potential opportunity of Mr Anthony Marfell’s impending retirement, as a chance to stake a claim for the premier berth. Last summer, an excellent pre-season of conditioning clearly had an impact on Brad’s fitness and resulting performances. Unfortunately for him, a combination of injuries and work has not quite allowed him to continue with the same training intensity as the season has worn on. If he is able to replicate the off-season again though this summer, the season of 2016/17 may well see Brad’s introduction to the main stage at Mortimer Park.
Away from the game Brad works in the Sales Department for Watson Fuels. He is a stout member of the front row club, who are regularly the last to leave the bar after training and home games and is also a member of the infamous Honey Badgers Sevens side, which is predominantly made up of Lucs players, and attends various local tournaments during the summer.
