With cauliflower ears, a penchant for smoking, an ability to run a very efficient line-out, and an intense dislike of running and Luke Bennet’s warm-ups, Mike Cheasley could be described as the re-incarnation of Chris Jaques. Where the two differ largely though is that his predecessor had a voice and let you hear it fairly often, whereas Cheese is so quiet sometimes we have to check he’s still breathing!
Another born and bred Luctonian, Cheese is the sort of character every player wants on their side as opposed to being up against you. He is honest and tireless in his efforts for the team and must have an incredible knack of riling opponents as he seems to come out of almost every breakdown in the midst of a scuffle, with a big grin across his face. For a workhorse he has an unusually high understanding of the game and is an excellent lineout technician. Ask him what position he plays and he will tell you Open-side Flanker, although of recent years his no nonsense hard work has ensured he spends most of his playing time in the ‘boiler room’ at 1st XV level. Like many men what could have been if he had just been blessed with another 6 inches?! We would probably be looking at a National 1 or Championship lock! As it is we are lucky to have this man of few words in our ranks as a Luctonian.
