Rhyan Scott-Young joined us at Lucs at the start of this campaign, having been a part of the Worcester Warriors AASE programme last season. As a club we had tabs on Rhyan last season through both Ryan Watkins, as his coach at Worcester and through Norm, who dealt with him during his Hereford and Worcester selection at U19s level last season. What we knew when Rhy joined us mid-way through pre-season was that we were getting an extraordinary athlete, who was still raw in his rugby development but who had bags of potential, and his first season has confirmed exactly that.
Rhy is fast! When him and Josh Watkins go after each other in training the rest of us just stand and watch because acceleration-wise these two are on another level to anything we have seen in a black and white jersey for many a year. With all that speed, Rhyan’s first proper season of senior rugby has probably been a little frustrating for him. He has featured in the 1st XV on a number of occasions but all bar one of these have been off the bench, allowing him to notch up just the one try. In the 2nd XV where he has featured more often he has proved to be very elusive, racking up a number of tries, with his pace and power proving to be very tough to handle on the wings at that level. If he is patient and continues to work at his game under Ryan Watkins tutelage, his time will undoubtedly come, if not this season, then probably next year.
Away from rugby, Rhyan only finished college last year and currently works in Asda stacking shelves. He comes across as a very lovely, quiet, decent chap whenever you chat to him. As such there is at this moment not that much dirt to dish on the boy, although of late there have definitely been rumblings of him being a bit of a Lothario type with the ladies, so as he starts to become more comfortable at Lucs then watch this space!
