It is easy to forget that Will is still of such tender age when you consider he has been gracing our premier pitch at Mortimer Park for what is now six seasons. Another born and bred Luctonian, who was schooled at Christ College, Brecon, it wouldn’t be an over-exaggeration to suggest that Will has been one of the most talented players Lucs has produced in the last 20 years. Testament of this is his England Counties shirt that hangs in the clubhouse, which was earned back in 2012 at 19 years of age on a tour of East Africa.
A lovely balanced runner with a tremendous skill-set, ‘Berty’ has the ability to play almost anywhere across the backline. His early years in the 1st XV were spent almost solely in the 10 shirt. It was during these seasons that his performances earned the England Counties call up and interest from other larger local clubs. However an episode of glandular fever and subsequent loss of form, combined with Will’s growing commitments on the farm after leaving university meant that luckily for us he remained at Lucs. Since then he has also sustained roles at Full Back and most recently an important stint at 13, where a successful centre combination with Geriant Langdon played a big part in keeping us alive in National League rugby last season.
Away from rugby Will is pretty much either on a tractor if he is not on the p***. He has an uncanny ability to be late for almost every meet-time going and I can sincerely say that the only exercise I have ever seen him do in the Lucs Gym is bicep curls in his never-ending quest to attract a suitable girlfriend. The ‘party-boy’ himself is actually leaving us for a couple of months through November to the end of January as he does a spot of travelling the world, but I am sure we will still see plenty of him on the 1st XV pitch this season and for many more to come.
