The Luctonians pack putting the pressure on Bedford Athletic.
Founded in 1948 Old Luctonians Rugby Club as it was then known, has come a long way. As we prepare to celebrate our 60th year and hone the skills of reminiscing, we are also learning to live within our fantastic new facility. Since the building work began on August 7th 2006 our tired clubhouse has been transformed and now offers all visitors whether player, spectator or partygoer a venue that is modern, functional and spacious.
Those three words could be used to describe the style of rugby that Luctonians have always aspired to taking onto the field in their time in Midlands 1. A poor start to the 2006/7 season was followed by a series of gutsy performances post Xmas. The team could have put the season to bed on the penultimate weekend but decided that a win against league champions Luton to avoid relegation was a better option. True to their word the team delivered a memorable 27-8 win.
The preparations for this season started back in April with a focus on getting a good start to the league campaign. Lessons had been learnt and settling for playing in Midlands 1 is not good enough in such a competitive league where the bottom side can beat the top, and any one of 4 sides could pick up the third relegation spot on the final weekend.
The increased level of professionalism injected by new coach Viv Wolley saw Luctonians surge to six straight wins to begin the 2007-2008 season. However, there were then a few hiccups with losses to the other three sides in the top four. Going into the Christmas break the confidence returned and after a hardfought win away against Newport the 1st XV once again hit thier straps (australian colloquialism) with a big win against Derby in the Cup and then a convincing 39-6 defeat of Longton in the last league game of the year.
Post xmas and a front row crisis hit. All clubs go thru it at some point but better to have it when you've got points in the bag compared to DK who sufferered early season. Marfell had a long awaited knee op, Steve Jaques ended up in hospital with pnuemonia, Fergie got a better offer from Ludlow and Ben McGowan pulled a strongbow tendon from his knee to big toe. All this happened two days before S. Leicester. Up steps Mikey Jones from hooking in the seconds, Jamie Fletcher from No.8 in the thirds and Beamo slips across to tight head from the lambing shed. The boys have done us proud and although we have lost the last four games, we should have won 3 of them if we'd converted the scoring opportunites on offer.
