North Midlands Cup Quarter Final
Sutton Coldfield 15 - Luctonians 13
All the team had been looking forward to this game for weeks, especially with an abundance of cancelled matches recently. The match started well with Lucs scoring an early try after 2 minutes. Aramis, playing in at 12, touched down after a good run, certainly put down a challenge to a strong Sutton team. The try went unconverted, but Lucs were soon threatening again with Sean making good ground, well supported by Aramis.
There followed 10 minutes of Sutton possession that was rewarded in the 19th minute by a line-out on the Lucs 5 metre line. A well rehearsed move saw their wing burst through the line to score in the corner. Again, the wind made the conversion difficult.
Sutton continued with some strong play with a powerful set of forwards and threatened the Lucs line, only to see the ball held up and no try allowed. At half-time it was proving to be a closely matched contest with the score 5-5.
Lucs showed their intent again from the re-start with a try by Will Morris after just 4 minutes. Sutton struck back soon after to bring the score level again. As the match continued we saw the continuing trend of Sutton winning the scrums, but Lucs always threatening once the ball could be passed out to the three-quarters.
With just 4 minutes left, Sutton were penalised for offside by their number 9 at a scrum, and Will Morris stepped up to coolly place the penalty kick between the posts from a good 30 metres.
For the first time in the match, Lucs seemed to be getting the best of the Sutton pack with a strong scrum and then a well-worked maul near their own line. But then, with just seconds left on the referee's watch, a clearance kick from behind the line was charged down and Sutton scored the winning try. It was a disappointing end and the team had clearly put all their efforts to the game, but Sutton had just marginally been the stronger team.
Lucs will hope to move on from this defeat, and with the right attitude can look forward optimistically, to the rest of the season.
