Under 16s Season Review 2019/20

Well what a season we were having and what an amazing end was ahead.

The plan 3 years ago when we joined the then U14s was to grow the squad and finish at the end of the summer in 2020 with a once in a lifetime trip to South Africa, whilst picking a cup or 2 along the way.

At U14 stage we grew vastly in numbers and somehow (with 3 byes along the way) got ourselves into the North Mids Cup Final – Narrowly losing to Worcester at home.

At U15 stage the wheels came off the bus big time, but the squad held together and looked ahead to the 2019/20 season.

We were joined briefly at the start of this season by Rob Lewis whose CV was amazing and we all thought ‘Wow lets have some of this!’ but, due to other commitments, he soon left the building. This left Eddie & Ibbie, manfully helped by the 3 linchpins (Jeff, Dan & Andrew) to resume their roles and finish the job they started. We were then joined by Joff Bemand during October, who has done a manful job with the forwards along with the odd cameo appearance from Andy Douthwaite along the way.

We were extremely lucky when Gethin Davies joined our ranks from Gwernyfed and his 10 role has been pivotal in how many results have gone. Our first game of the season was in fact at the Lucs Junior Festival, against our arch rivals Hereford, who we have not beaten for several years. All that pre season training payed off and we dispatched them, along with Shrewsbury & Ledyard to take the title. Excellent stuff.

Taking the Silver at the Sixways Cup Tournament

Next up was a trip to Worcester and entry into the Sixways Cup, which blow me we only went and won the trophy, with some excellent skills and determination on the premier pitch. That’s 2 trophies from 2 tournaments!

After this there was no stopping us. Since the Sixways Cup, we have played 13 games and won 13, blasting through the North Mids Cup, beating Whitchurch, Stourbridge and Hereford (again) along the way to reach the final, which was to be held at Mortimer Park on April 26th. – The planets were lining up and we were unstoppable.

Beating Stourbridge on way to the North Mids Cup Final

Along with all this success on the field, off it we were all guns blazing doing fundraising all over the pace to raise funds for our trip to South Africa this summer. One of the most memorable events was a post match singalong with our dear old friend Burkie just before Christmas – Great memories.

 So there we were

• Excellent squad – 31 signed on all season
• 2 tournamant trophies
• Unbeaten all season
• Through to the North Mids Cup final v Worcester at Mortimer Park
• A great once in a lifetime trip to South Africa in the summer of 2020

AND THEN BANG!

Very sad but we must all appreciate the severity of the situation and so the season is over.

The Boys in their South Africa Tour training tops

We are planning now to go to Cape Town next summer, but due to some of players’ commitments we will be short of a few, which is a real shame after all the hard work everyone has put in.

I must thank all the coaches, assistant coaches, parents, Club and of course the squad for being amazing.
THANK YOU ALL.

Lastly, I have to mention Will Pugh & Cam Tudge, two members of the squad who have gone the extra mile, time after time over the past 10 years.  They are great role models and ambassadors for the club. Thanks Boys for all your help on and off the field, will hopefully see you on that 1st team pitch one day.

So – That’s it then, time to hand over the boys to Carmen and The Colts, put my feet up and have a beer or two.

Keep safe please.
